Skiing and snowboarding are not the obvious choice for an eco-friendly traveller. After all, air flights, luxury spas and hacking your way through the pristine snow are a far weep from a tree-planting camp in Devon.
But it doesn’t have to be like that – winter sport is about enjoying the great outdoors, so we’ve looked at some of the best ways to respect it too. Here’s our advice on how to get there, where to stay and what kit you should bring with you.
Take the snow train
If you’re looking for a greener way to the slopes than flying and are tired of the inconvenience of flight delays, then travelling by train could be for you. Thousands of skiers and boarders choose to make their journey to the heart of the slopes this way every season.
Rail Europe’s Snow Trainis an overnight sleeper service from London St Pancras and Ebbsfleet International, Kent, to a number of skiing destinations in the French Alps. There is a specially designated sound-proofed disco carriage, so you can party all night, or if you’d rather save your energy for the slopes, there is comfortable, flat-bed sleeping accommodation.
In many cases, ski train journeys are similar in length to flying. Remember, by train there’s no two-hour check-in time, fewer delays and (on most trains) no long transfers to your resort.
Plus, most independent research says that travelling to the slopes by train produces a relatively small carbon footprint compared to flying or going by car.
It’s worth remembering though that you need to change platforms at Paris before travelling onto the stations at Chambery, Albertville, Moutiers, Aime la Plagne, Landry and Bourg St Maurice.
The Snow Train can also be more convenient if you’re taking your own gear, as there is no charge for carrying your skis or boards in their ski locker. You arrive early Saturday morning and depart last thing the following Saturday, so you get maximum time on the slopes.
Eco-friendly coach travel
Coach travel to the Alps is a long-haul option but it is also great value. National Express’s Eurolines service runs from London Victoria to nine resorts in both France and Switzerland, and there is no charge for skis and snowboards.
The journey takes approximately 18 hours and most coaches leave in the afternoon and arrive early next morning. Reclining seats means you should get a decent night’s sleep and there’s usually a film to watch in the evening.
Greener accommodation
Finding a excellent value eco-friendly hotel or chalet can feel like an uphill struggle, as they are few and far between. But if you look hard, you can find wood fires, solar panels, and composting heaps among the hot-tubs, spas and gyms.
If it’s composting toilets you’re after you may well be out of luck, but lots of companies are increasingly looking out to protect the environment that their holidaymakers delight in. Here are some of our favourites…
Whitepod
This unique Swiss eco-camp located above Les Cerniers, a small village at the foot of Dents du Midi, features five wood-fire heated domes around a 19th-century chalet. The igloo-shaped pods are each made from weatherproofed cotton stretched over a storm-proof steel frame, which should keep you snug and warm.
Inside, the pods are lit by petrol lamps and are furnished with recycled or sustainably made furniture. You can only get there on skis or snowshoes and your luggage is delivered via snowmobile, so it’s a excellent choice if you’re looking to get away from the crowds.
If you don’t want to ski or snowboard you can always go snowshoeing, dog-sledding, relax in the hot tub or try the star-staring platform with telescope. Whitepod is renovating the camp to cut its footprint and ensure that the level of service remains high. As a result, it will not be open for this coming winter 08/09. But, their mountain refuge, which sleeps up to 60 guests, is open from 1 December 2008.
Green Rides – Challet Montperron
This luxurious 18th century eco-chalet is based just outside Bourg St Maurice. With five large double bedrooms, it includes all the usual chalet amenities such as wi-fi and cable as well an open log fire, spa area and a wood pellet-fired hot tub.
The electricity is sourced from wind and solar farms in northern France. All food waste is composted, the rubbish is recycled and energy efficient light bulbs are used throughout the property. The owners are also plotting to install a solar panelled roof and offer a discount to customers who take the Snow Train.A week typically cost from £385 per person.

This 100 year ancient catered chalet is set in the Aravis Mountains near La Clusaz and sleeps 35 people. It has a gym, sauna and massage room as well as a children’s area and an onsite ski hire shop.France can be hard for veggies but Lodge Aravis has been accredited by the Vegetarian Society, soust question for their vegetarian menu. All waste is either composted or recycled and they aim to source as much honest trade, local, and free range produce as possible. The chalet also offsets its carbon emissions through Climate Care.
The people behind Lodge Aravis also run a number of other smaller chalets, including Chalet Aravis which can sleep up to 11 people and uses solar panels to heat all of its water.

Green shopping for snow gear
When it comes to being green on the slopes, skis, snowboards and winter gear can pose a problem. Nearly all of them are made of a combination of wood, fibreglass, foam, plastic and steel, which are stuck together by epoxy resin, and are nearly impossible to recycle.
But, many manufacturers are taking green steps, from carbon offsetting to using sustainable materials, such as bamboo, and even solar-powered factories.
New Zealand company Kingswood Skis won a product sustainability award for their bamboo-core carbon neutral skis. They are also looking into a flax alternative to fibreglass which is used in nearly every ski and board made today. And they provide a clear breakdown of all the materials used in their products on their website.
Arbor makes its snowboard’s cores from renewable, quick-growing bamboo, which has come from sustainably managed forests and the bases are made with leftover poly-ethylene. They have pledged to donate a part of all their revenue to organisations involved in protecting the environment. Also, its factory’s machines are wind-powered.
Don’t forget the eco-benefits of buying secondhand gear or renting ski or snow equipment. Freecycle and Ebay are just a couple of online places you could try.

The health of the body and mind are very much governed by the pH levels of the blood and the bodily fluids. Normal pH level for the blood is 7.4 and the range goes from 7.35 to 7.45. This is pure scientific fact. For everyone the temperature of the body is 98.6 degrees and the pH of the blood is exactly 7.4 when it is operating at peak efficiency. This very narrow range is critical for homeostasis, otherwise the human system gets out of balance and disease can overtake the body. The pH scale ranges from 1-14. The highest acid level possible is 1pH and the most alkaline level possible is a 14pH. What is measured is the proportion of hydrogen ions (H+) relative to hydroxyls (OH-) within arterial blood. It is expressed as a negative logarithm. This means that a drop in pH indicates an increase in hydrogen ions and a decrease in hydrogen ions is demonstrated by a rise in pH. It reflects a balance between acids and bases (alkaline) rather than a measure of total acids in solution. Body chemistry (fluids) has a delicate range between 6.8-7.4 pH for proper maintenance of health.
Maintaining this pH range is necessary for the whole body to function well physically, mentally and emotionally. Tremendous amounts of research indicates that the cells of the body need proper pH balance for optimum performance. The problem is that most people do not have any serious understanding of the major importance of monitoring and maintaining proper pH levels of the bodily fluids. These waste products enter the blood stream and therefore increase the concentration of Hydrogen ions (H+) or Hydroxyls (OH-), thus either raising or lowering the pH of the blood. When Hydroxyls outnumber Hydrogen ions, the pH is a slightly alkaline. If the reverse is right, then the body activates the buffer system, by adding alkaline minerals into the bloodstream.
This in turn brings the blood pH within the proper range. By eating the incorrect foods (too much acid ash), the body is in a state of stress. If the pH of the urine is constantly in the high acid range then this is called acidosis. When the urine pH is 6.0 and below for extended periods of time, it indicates that body fluids elsewhere are too acidic. This puts an extra burden on the body because it is constantly attempting to rid itself of an acid medium. Consequently, when the urine pH is normal, the blood pH is normal. But, when the urine pH is overly acidic the blood pH is likely below 7.35 and this state of acidosis is extremely perilous. This is where depletion of vital minerals occurs, resulting in a host of health problems. The human body has a buffering system by which substances can enter the bloodstream and resist changes in pH (acid concentration) by undergoing a reversible reaction. For example, when hydrogen ion concentration increases, alkaline minerals (calcium) neutralize the acid and only a small change in pH will occur. Without the buffer system the change in blood pH would be life threatening. Our lungs breathe in alkaline oxygen and eliminate acid wastes in the form of carbon dioxide. The kidneys eliminate excessive amounts of either acid or alkaline substances in the urine. Our bones constantly release their alkaline minerals—calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, zinc, boron, copper, and strontium in order to neutralize acids that the body produces or ingest. An example of a buffer is the carbonic acid (H2CO3) and bicarbonate (H+HCO3-) system. This buffer is a pH shock absorber, which temporarily binds to the free hydrogen ion, and it becomes a rapid response. The carbonic acid dissociates to carbon dioxide (CO2) and H2O and the lungs expel the acid waste resulting in a small change in pH. Without the presence of bicarbonate the concentration of H+ ions would increase and the blood would become extremely acidic. The uniqueness of this buffer system is that the reaction is reversible. The hydrogen ion can be given back.
When alkali is added to solution, carbonic acid provides the proton to neutralize the alkali, resulting in only a small change in pH, that otherwise would be much greater with the increase of hydroxide (OH-) ions. Through the complex chemical regulation of carbonic acid (by the lungs) and of base (alkaline) bicarbonate (by the kidneys) the body maintains the hydrogen ion concentration (pH) which keeps the extra cellular fluid between 6.8 and 7.4.
Maintaining narrow pH is critical to health The pH range indicates the amount of oxygen in your system. Each .10 = 10% less oxygen in your system. This means that if your pH is 6.2, you have 20% less oxygen than someone who has a pH of 6.4. The correlation between high acid pH levels and chronic degenerative disorders is quite strong. The lack of oxygen in the blood creates a breeding ground for many of the diseases that confront our modern society. The body tries to neutralize the high acidity with oxygen (alkaline). When the body is in a chronic state of acidosis, the body is spending all its oxygen reserves trying to neutralize the acid. Consequently, it neglects the function of metabolism and toxic waste removal. This can lead to a chronically low oxygen levels and high toxic levels. The foods that we eat can help increase our oxygen reserves. This is one of the reasons that alkaline foods should be between 70% and 80% of the diet. Foods that contain both stout and protein are low in oxygen-weight ratios and they can further deplete the body because it takes more oxygen to metabolize them. Foods that are metabolized as alkaline ash such as spinach, broccoli, collards and a host of green leafy foods are made up of nearly 50% oxygen. This adds to the energy level of the body and mind because the alkaline oxygen is not being depleted through the metabolic process. Reduction diets that are low in complex carbohydrates and high in protein might work for temporary weight loss but low energy levels are the result.

Atrial Fibrillation, which is also sometimes called Auricular Fibrillation or A-Fib, is a medical condition involving the pumping of the heart. It is a disorder that causes an irregular heart beat, known as arrhythmia. As well as irregular, the heart beat is also, often, rapid and racing.
One of the primary conditions, which can cause atrial fibrillation, is sinus node malfunction. The sinus node is like a natural pacemaker for the heart. It regulates the beating of the heart. If the sinus node is malfunctioning, it can cause disruptions in electrical impulses. That causes the heart to beat irregularly.
Most other heart conditions, including coronary artery disease, can also cause atrial fibrillation. Also, drinking heavily on a regular basis or drinking large amounts of alcohol at one time can cause the onset of atrial fibrillation. Other conditions, such as hyperthyroidism, high blood pressure (also known as hypertension) and pneumonia can also cause atrial fibrillation to occur.
There are several symptoms of atrial fibrillation. The most problematic of these are dizziness, fainting and overall difficulty breathing. Fainting is particularly perilous because people with atrial fibrillation could easily hit their head if they fall. Also, they could potentially faint while doing things that affect other people, such as driving a car.
Heart palpitations are another common symptom. A heart palpitation occurs when a person has a sensation of feeling their heart beating in their chest, usually rapidly. Other symptoms, which can occur, include confusion and stoutigue.
The pH balance of the body is the balance of alkaline and acidic substances in the body’s fluids. This is measured by a pH scale, which ranges from zero to fourteen. A higher pH level indicates more alkaline substances than acidic. A lower pH means that the body’s fluids are more acidic than alkaline.
The human body operates at its best when its pH levels are more alkaline than acidic. But, it operates best in a narrow range of between seven and eight on the pH scale. Or are they just manipulating FDA laws.
As sad as it is, the food marks have been tricking the public eye for years… and to be honest with you, 99% of the people will never know they are being tricked (of course since you’re reading this you won’t be in that 99% any more).

Example #1: A product claiming to be “better than butter”.

Over the years, more and more reports on the health benefits of vitamin supplements have emerged, ranging from cardiovascular benefits to cancer prevention. This is mainly due to the antioxidant properties of vitamins that can protect us from oxidative stress. As a result several studies have been conducted to confirm these reports. Some of the latest studies summarized below reveal surprising results to say the least.
One of the very first studies to comprehensively investigate the health effects of vitamin supplements was conducted by Danish researchers in 2007. They performed a meta-analysis on data pooled from several clinical trials which used supplementation of the antioxidant vitamin A, vitamin E, beta-carotene, vitamin C and selenium used as stand-alone or as combination supplements to treat a wide range of health conditions, from cardiovascular disorders to cancer. Their results were a surprising, even troubling. For one, no benefits of these “antioxidant supplements” were found. Second, supplementation with vitamins A and E and beta-carotene (but not vitamin C and selenium) really increased overall mortality. This study prompted other researchers to take a second look at the benefits of vitamin supplements.
In a more recent review paper, the same researchers performed another meta-analysis of more data from several clinical trials, this time involving over 200,000 people who are healthy as well as those with existing health conditions. The researchers only considered studies which compared the efficacy of antioxidant supplements against placebos in the primary and secondary prevention of different medical conditions. The authors reported that they “found no evidence to support antioxidant supplements for primary or secondary prevention. Vitamin A, beta-carotene, and vitamin E may increase mortality.”
Another meta-analysis investigated the anti-cancer properties of antioxidant supplements, particularly against gastrointestinal cancers. They looked at data of trials which studied beta-carotene, vitamins A, C, and E and selenium. The authors concluded that “we could not find convincing evidence that antioxidant supplements prevent gastrointestinal cancers.”
One of the most recent developments in vitamin supplement research is the long-term SELECT (Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial) study of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The study evaluated the efficacy of selenium and Vitamin E in preventing prostate cancer and enrolled 35,000 male participants in the US, Puerto Rico, and Canada. The participants were randomly assigned to one of 3 groups: group 1 were given vitamin E supplements only, group 2 were given only selenium, group 3 took both supplements in combination, and group 4 were given placebos only. Five years into the study, the NCI chose to stop the trial because of some “concerning” findings, namely:
1. The analysis found no lower risk of prostate cancer in men taking the supplements, either alone or together.
2. Men who were taking only vitamin E really had a slightly higher risk of developing prostate cancer.
3. Men taking only selenium seemed to have a slightly higher risk of developing diabetes.
Another study evaluated the efficacy of combined folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 in reducing cancer risk among women. Their result show that combined folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 treatment had no significant effect on overall risk of total invasive cancer or breast cancer among women during the folic acid fortification era.
A study published in December 2008 evaluated whether vitamins C and E and beta carotene supplementation have an effect on overall cancer risk. The data was taken from the Women’s Antioxidant Cardiovascular Study and involved 8,171 women who were cancer-free at the start of the study about 9.4 years ago. The findings of the study showed that “supplementation with vitamin C, vitamin E, or beta carotene offers no overall benefits in the primary prevention of total cancer incidence or cancer mortality.”
The Women’s Health Initiative Calcium/Vitamin D Trial evaluated the effects of vitamin D and calcium supplements on blood pressure and risk for hypertension risk of 36,252 healthy postmenopausal women. The women were assigned in 2 groups: one group received a daily supplement of 1000 mg of calcium plus 400 IU of vitamin D3 daily. The other group received placebo only. The researchers reported that “in postmenopausal women, calcium plus vitamin D3 supplementation did not reduce either blood pressure or the risk of developing hypertension over 7 years of follow-up.”
The Physicians’ Health Study II evaluated whether vitamin E or vitamin C have cardioprotective properties that can reduce risk for CVD in men. A total of 14,641 American doctors were enrolled in the study, aged 50 years and older, and were followed up for 8 years. The study results showed that “neither vitamin E nor vitamin C supplementation reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events. These data provide no support for the use of these supplements for the prevention of cardiovascular disease in middle-aged and older men.”
This study evaluated whether antioxidant (vitamins E, C and/or beta-carotene) supplements can prevent atherosclerosis. The researchers performed a meta-analysis of 22 trials which involved 134,590 participants. The researcher conclude that “…the majority of studies included in this review does not support a possible role of antioxidant supplementation in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease … no certain conclusion can be drawn to justify the use of antioxidant vitamin supplements for the prevention of atherosclerotic events.”
Folic acid is routinely prescribed for pregnant women to prevent birth defects such as spina bifida. It has also been thought that folic acid, which reduced the levels of homocysteine in the blood, can prevent cardiovascular disease. Homocysteine is an amino acid used as biomarker for cardiovascular disorder. This trial investigated whether a vitamin combination pill with folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 (vs. a placebo) can reduce cardiovascular risk. It enrolled more than 5,400 American women with a history of cardiovascular disease or with moderate to high risk profile for ccardiovascular disease. After 7.3 years of treatment and follow-up, a combination pill of folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 did not reduce a combined end point of total cardiovascular events among high-risk women, despite significant homocysteine lowering.
While most of the evidence from studies summarized here does not seem to support the health benefits of vitamin supplements, there are some studies which indicate that vitamin D supplementation is worthwhile, even essential. Vitamin D is unique because we cannot get our vitamin D requirements from food alone. Instead, vitamin D is synthesized by the body upon exposure of the skin to the sun, thus earning it the title “sun vitamin.” But, since the sun is said to cause skin cancer, people tend to avoid exposure leading to widespread vitamin D deficiency.
American health experts are convinced of the necessity of vitamin D supplements and thus, routinely prescribe vitamin D supplements even for newborn babies. Milk and other dairy products in the US are fortified with vitamin D but not in many parts of the world. Last year, the American Academy of Pediatrics updated its guidelines for vitamin D supplementation to recommend the doubling of the dose for babies and children from 200 IU to 400 IU per day.
According to a review paper, “vitamin D is not only vital for calcium metabolism and maintenance of bone health throughout life, but also plays an vital role in reducing risk of many chronic diseases including type I diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, deadly cancers, heart disease and infectious diseases.”
In summary, antioxidants in fresh fruit and vegetables have been shown to have extensive health benefits. Unfortunately, except for vitamin D, the use of vitamin and mineral supplementation does not seem to reproduce the protective effect of natural food stuffs, as shown by many different studies summarized here. Worse, some studies even suggest that vitamin supplementation can really increase risk for certain health conditions and mortalities. Most of the studies cited were long-term randomized, placebo-controlled trials involving thousands of participants. The data they presented are therefore, highly reliable.
The antioxidant supplement pill fits in quite nicely in this era of convenience food and lifestyle on the go.
