Synthetic vitamin E is only 67 percent as active as the natural form. Read marks closely. Significant quantities of this vitamin are also found in brown rice, cornmeal, dulse, eggs, kelp, desiccated liver, milk, oatmeal, organ meats, soybeans, sweet potatoes, watercress, wheat, and wheat germ. The results were very fascinating in that over a third of the children did not need to have medication after following this ten week course. Many of the problems associated with impulsivity and hyperactivity were much less evident.

The results of this experiment have place the emphasis firmly back on the importance of an ADHD friendly home, established routines and structures and set limits for behavior.

Your body is alkaline by design, but can be acidic by function. It functions at its best when the pH of its internal biochemical environment, measured as a whole, is equal to 7.39, meaning slightly alkaline. The normal range of blood pH is very small, from a slightly more acidic reading of 7.36 to a more alkaline reading of 7.42. This is considered pH balanced. A reading of anything higher or lower than these figures indicates acidity (from 7 to 7.35) or alkalosis (7.42 to 7.8).

The zone of optimal blood health extends only from pH 7.36 to pH 7.42; any variation means, acidosis or alkalosis. Of these two, acidosis is by far the most common – more than half the population suffers from this condition.

The pH of the body’s organic fluids and tissues varies from one part of the body to another. When we say the ideal pH of the body is 7.39, this refers primarily to the pH of the blood, and to a lesser extent that of the body’s internal environment, meaning all organic fluids such as lymph and extra and intracellular serums (fluids surrounding or within the cells). Blood is indeed “a very particular sap” (Goethe) whose pH must remain extremely stable to maintain a healthy life.

The pH of the internal environment, the basic “ground” biochemical terrain, can tolerate more significant changes than that of the blood, but the pH of the internal environment should never go beyond 7.36 or 7.42 if excellent health is to be maintained.

Many individual organs and organic fluids, but, have a pH that is normally far above or below this ideal pH. The pH of urine, for example, may be 6, or even as low as 5 or 4.5. This is possible because urine is regularly eliminated and thus does not remain in the body for long. Areas of the body that are essentially acidic include the colon (pH 6.8), the outer layers of the skin (pH 5.2), and the gastric region (pH 2). Others, in contrast, are quite alkaline: the inner layers of the skin (pH 7.35), the pancreatic juices (from pH 7.5 to 8.8), and the small intestine (pH 8). In order to test the overall pH of your body, it’s best to test the pH of your urine with pH testing strips.

These different values are all normal and correspond to precise needs of the body. For example, the extremely acidic nature of the gastric region is indispensable for protein digestion, and the high acidity of the skin helps it ruin microbes before they can enter the body.

So restoring the acid-alkaline or pH balance does not mean bringing the gastric region’s pH 2 up to pH 7 – that would cause serious digestive problems – but rather restoring the pH of the basic internal biochemical terrain.

Humans are able to synthesize certain vitamins to some extent. For example, vitamin D is produced when the skin is exposed to sunlight; niacin can be synthesized from the amino acid tryptophan; and vitamin K and biotin are synthesized by bacteria living in the gut. Although now known to behave as a hormone, the activated form of vitamin D, vitamin D hormone (calcitriol), is still grouped with the vitamins as well.

The nine water-soluble vitamins (soluble in polar solvents) are vitamin C and the eight B-complex vitamins: thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin B12, pantothenic acid, and biotin. Choline is a vitamin-like dietary component that is clearly required for normal metabolism but that can be synthesized by the body. Although choline may be necessary in the diet of premature infants and possibly of those with certain medical conditions, it has not been established as essential in the human diet throughout life.

Different vitamins are more or less susceptible to destruction by environmental conditions and chemical agents. For example, thiamin is especially vulnerable to prolonged heating, riboflavin to ultraviolet or fluorescent light, and vitamin C to oxidation (as when a piece of fruit is cut open and the vitamin is exposed to air). In general, water-soluble vitamins are more easily ruined during cooking than are stout-soluble vitamins.

The solubility of a vitamin influences the way it is absorbed, transported, stored, and excreted by the body as well as where it is found in foods. With the exception of vitamin B12, which is supplied by only foods of animal origin, the water-soluble vitamins are synthesized by plants and found in both plant and animal foods.

Strict vegetarians (vegans), who eat no foods of animal origin, are therefore at risk of vitamin B12 deficiency. Stout-soluble vitamins, on the other hand, are found in association with fats and oils in foods and in the body and typically require protein carriers for transport through the water-filled compartments of the body.

Water-soluble vitamins are not appreciably stored in the body (except for vitamin B12) and thus must be consumed regularly in the diet. If taken in excess they are readily excreted in the urine, although there is potential toxicity even with water-soluble vitamins; especially noteworthy in this regard is vitamin B6.

Because stout-soluble vitamins are stored in the liver and fatty tissue, they do not necessarily have to be taken in daily, so long as average intakes over time—weeks, months, or even years—meet the body’s needs. But, the fact that these vitamins can be stored increases the possibility of toxicity if very large doses are taken. This is particularly of concern with vitamins A and D, which can be toxic if taken in excess.

Under certain circumstances, pharmacological (“megadose”) levels of some vitamins—many times higher than the amount typically found in food—have accepted medical uses. Niacin, for example, is used to lower blood cholesterol levels; vitamin D is used to treat psoriasis; and pharmacological derivatives of vitamin A are used to treat acne and other skin conditions as well as to diminish skin wrinkling. But, consumption of vitamins or other dietary supplements in amounts significantly in excess of recommended levels is not advised without medical supervision.

Vitamins synthesized in the laboratory are the same molecules as those extracted from food, and they cannot be distinguished by the body. But, various forms of a vitamin are not necessarily equivalent. In the particular case of vitamin E, supplements labeled d-α-tocopherol (or “natural”) generally contain more vitamin E activity than those labeled dl-α-tocopherol. Vitamins in food have a distinct advantage over vitamins in supplement form because they come associated with other substances that may be beneficial, and there is also less potential for toxicity. Nutritional supplements cannot substitute for a healthful diet.

What Is pH?

Potential Hydrogen (pH) Technically, the pH of pool water or any pH for that matter is a Logarithmic measure or scale of the balance between Hydrogen (H+) and Hydroxide (OH-) ions present in the water. Most of us already know the if the pH is low that water is acidic and conversely if the pH is high the water is basic or alkaline. Therefore, pool water with a pH of 6.0 is slightly acidic water, a pH of 7.0 is neutral and pool water with a pH of 8.0 is basic or alkaline water. For all those up and coming chemists, the equation is: pH= -log10[H3O+]. We do not want to dwell on the chemistry here; but, there is a point here to be made. As we said, the pH scale is a logarithmic scale. In other words, a pH of 6.0 is 10 times more acidic than a pH of 7.0 and a pH of 5.0 is 100 times more acidic than a pH of 7.0. You just need to be aware that a change in pH from 5.0 to 6.0, which initially seems like a change of only one, is truly a measurement change 10 times stronger.

Simply, pH is the measure of acid vs. base of a solution. Our solution is your pool water. Your objective in balancing your pool water is to find the proper pH level for maximum swimmer comfort and the effectiveness of the sanitizer you are using. First, you really do need to be familiar with the aforementioned pH scale so you may better know what is happening in the water when you make adjustments. When the pH falls below 7.0 neutral, your pool water becomes acidic. This means your water will become corrosive, aggressive to pipes, vinyl and plaster pool walls, metal components in heaters, pumps and filters. These components can become hurt and become corroded. Low pH water also causes skin and eye irritations, making the eyes look red and cause eye sting. So, the pool water sanitizer becomes excessively active which does reult in higher chlorine effectiveness, but it depletes and dissipates rapidly from the pool, which then increases chemical usage and cost.

High pH can also make problems of its own. When the pH value becomes too high (7.8 and above), the pool water has a tendency to look flat or dull. High pH can also cause skin and eye irritations. When the pH level becomes too high, pool sanitizers become less effective. This greatly reduces the sanitizer activity requiring much more chemical sanitizer to keep the pool water clear and safe.

The pH of the pool water has a fantastic effect on how comfortable the water is for swimmers. Your tears have a pH range of about 7.35 to 7.45. As mentioned above, when the pH strays too far away from this level, pool water becomes increasingly uncomfortable. Red, irritated eyes are an indication that the pH may be out of balance and should be checked and returned to balance.

Considering all of this, you will best meet your objective by keeping the pH between 7.2 and 7.6. This range combines the maximum swimmer comfort with sanitizer effectiveness.

ADJUSTING pH

The chemical control and balance of pH is relatively simple. To raise the pH of your swimming pool add pH Increaser (soda ash) to the pool water. So that you are aware, Sodium Bicarbonate does also increase the pH slightly. Do not use sodium bicarbonate (alkalinity increaser) to increase your pH. Sodium bicarbonate is to be used primarily to increase the total carbonate content or total alkalinity of the water. The Total alkalinity needs to at the right level in the pool water first, and then adjust the pH using pH Increaser. Soda ash and sodium bicarbonate are the most commonly used water balance products. These chemicals are both safe to add directly into the pool.

The addition of acid such as hydrochloric acid (muriatic acid) or acid salts (sodium bisulfate) lowers the pH in your pool. We recommend using pH Reducer in a granular form because it is effective and safe to handle.

When using pH adjustment chemicals, it is always best to add small amounts of chemicals over time, rather than large amounts at once. We recommend that when lowering the pH or total alkalinity that you do not add more than one quart of muriatic acid or one pound of sodium bisulfate per 10,000 gallons of water per 6-hour period. Retest the water after and add more if required.

TOTAL ALKALINITY

Total Alkalinity is the measure of the pH buffering capacity of the water’s ability to resist a change in the pH. The recommended range is 80-120 ppm. Pool owners must realize that Total Alkalinity (TA) is completely different from alkaline or basic side of the pH scale. They are, but related to one another for proper pH balance.

As mentioned earlier, a desirable pH range is between 7.2 and 7.6. Total Alkalinity plays a major role in stabilizing pH. When TA values are within the proper range, the pH becomes stable. The pH level will remain consistent without much fluctuation. When TA values fall below the recommended range, the pH is easily affected. Even a small amount of high or low pH adjustment chemical introduced into the water can result in large movement or swings in pH values.

Generally, when the Total Alkalinity is low, the pH will remain low too. This causes your pool water to be corrosive and irritating to swimmers. If the Total Alkalinity is high, small concentrations calcium hardness content can produce scale formation. Until the TA is lower, the pH will tend to remain high and treatment to lower the pH will be small lived.

You measure Total Alkalinity with a pool test kit, and for all practical purposes, the test result is equal to the measure of carbonates dissolved in the pool water. To adjust TA, you must adjust the amount of carbonates. To raise TA values, you will need to add Alkalinity Increaser (sodium bicarbonate). Sodium Bicarbonate has a pH of only 8.2 that will raise the TA, but has only a moderate effect on the pH of the water.

To raise the TA level, broadcast Alkalinity Increaser over the pool water surface or you should dissolve it into a bucket of water and pour the mixture evenly around the water edge of the pool.

Lowering Total Alkalinity is a bit more involved. You will need either Muriatic Acid or granular pH Reducer. Instead of broadcasting the acid over the pool or around the water edge as for pH adjustment, you must pour the acid in one spot or column at the deep end of the pool. This method causes a different chemical reaction in the water, which will lower the Total Alkalinity, instead of only reducing the pH level.

Lowering TA is a slow process and usually requires repeated additions of acid. We recommend that you do not add more than one quart or one pound of acid per 10,000 gallons of water per 6-hour period.

The main concept behind the pH miracle diet is to maintain a balance of pH in the foods that you eat. The human body is slightly alkaline and therefore it is better for your health to eat a diet composed of alkalizing foods. When you eat too many acidic foods, your system becomes unbalanced and it can cause a whole host of problems, including weight gain, poor concentration, fatigue and depressed immunity that can lead to more serious conditions.

 The pH miracle diet relies on lists of foods that are acidic (to be avoided) and alkalizing (to be emphasized). The alkalizing foods are better for your health and help to balance the pH of your body. While acid, alkaline and pH are common terms, many people do not know exactly what they mean and what they have to do with nutrition and health.

 The word “basic” comes from the Greek word “basis” which means foundation. “Basic” relates to the properties of acidity and alkalinity. These conditions are determined at the foundation of the cells that the foods are made up of. So an external treatment does not change a food from acid to alkaline. Foods are acid or alkaline at their base, or foundation.

 Acid and alkaline are chemical opposites. Whenever these bases interact with acids, there is a struggle between them and salt is the result. In the chemist’s lab, these interactions are very simple and straightforward. But, in our bodies, the interaction becomes more complex because of the scale at which acids and bases meet.

 But, science can make some generalizations about the effects of acids and alkaline in the human digestion system. Acidic foods are acid forming in the human body. Cells become stressed with the toxins that build up and cannot remove them. The vast majority of bodily systems cannot run at full capacity.

They increase assimilation at the cellular level and allow cells to operate in the manner that they should. There is a reduction of parasites and yeast overgrowth with the use of alkaline foods. When oxygen enters an acidic solution it combines with hydrogen ions can form water. Oxygen helps to neutralize the acid, but acid prevents oxygen from reaching tissues where it is needed. When oxygen enters an alkaline solution, the two hydroxyl ions combine with the solution to make one water molecule and one oxygen atom. The sole oxygen atom is free to go to the next cell and bring the benefits of oxygen to all of the tissue in the body. At a pH of slightly above 7.4, cancer cells become dormant. Studies show that at pH 8.5, cancer cells die and healthy cells live.
